Why won’t my computer recognize my ipod?

For some reason whenever I plug my new ipod touch (or any ipod) into my pc, a message comes up saying that “this usb device has malfunctioned, and the computer does not recognize it”….it happens with any ipod I plug in to my computer. This is frustrating because I can’t update it on iTunes anymore. Also, after I unplug the ipod, my computer stops recognizing any usb device until I shut off the back switch and turn it back on….then it starts recognizing usb devices again…..until I plug in an ipod again, then the process starts all over…..my pc seems to have trouble recognizing any ipod. I haven’t been able to update my ipod for a long time on iTunes because of this. I’m really not very intelligent with computers, so any help would be nice. thanks

my PC is a Windows XP 2002 model
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
2.99GHz, 512MB of RAM….if this helps

I had this problem once… I had been using a port for my ipod for a couple months, than it stopped working, it would read that something was in there, but couldn’t tell it was an ipod.

What I did was plug it into a port in the back, apparently it needed a highspeed usb, and the one I was using wasn’t anymore.

Try this, and see if it works. Don’t bother calling Apple, they’ll just tell you there’s nothing you can do and to buy another iPod.
